Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) can cause mild cold-like symptoms in adults but may lead to severe illness, like pneumonia, especially in:

  • Individuals 75 years and older
  • People with chronic heart or lung diseases
  • Those with weakened immune systems
  • Individuals living in nursing homes

In young children, symptoms include:

  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Wheezing
  • Feeding difficulty

In infants under 6 months, RSV may also cause:

  • Irritability
  • Decreased activity
  • Apnea (pauses in breathing)

If you or someone you know experiences severe symptoms, such as:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Worsening conditions

Seek medical attention immediately.

For those at higher risk, consult your doctor about ways to protect yourself and whether the RSV vaccine is right for you.
